While determining the appropriate medium in which to execute the commission for the clerestory windows of the Upland Road chapel (see [East window; Convent Chapel of the Sisters of our Lady of the Missions, Auckland]), McCahon experimented by producing this chi-rho symbol in cut and welded sheet metal. The cost proved prohibitive and the concept was not pursued
